In most cases is more cost effective to work with your existing staircase and refinish it. This typically includes putting new stair treads on or recapping the existing stair treads, installing new posts, railings and nosings or sanding and re-staining the existing posts, railings and nosings. The last thing to consider is the balusters, pickets or spindles. There are really two options that most consider – Iron wrought or wood.
Many home builders tend to put in plywood box stairs and carpet over top of the plywood treads. In this case we need to install a new stair tread over top of the plywood tread. This is very common and we see this in most homes in the GTA
You might have existing wood treads that are stained to match your existing flooring. If this is the case we can sand your existing stair treads, posts, railings and nosing’s and stain to match your new flooring.
The process is similar to recapping plywood treads. You need to remove the railing and spindles to properly sand the treads.
